Watch this!

This potentially may be filed under the "things nobody cares about but me" category, but I couldn't not post this. It's an excellent profile of Gary Oldman that aired back in 1998 on The South Bank Show. It features interviews with Gary himself, Anthony Hopkins, Kathy Burke, director Stephen Frears, and others. Gary talks about his childhood, the path he took to get to Hollywood, his struggle with alcoholism, and Nil By Mouth, his directorial debut.

ETA: Apparently LJ hates me and refuses to let me embed the video. So, here's a direct link:

ETA2: Thanks to Mary's advice, I was finally able to get the video to embed. Yay!

This sounds good; I love really good profiles of really good actors. And I really dig your commitment to Gary Oldman. :)

Too sleepy to watch now, but will do tomorrow, dear.

Hey, try this: Go back to youtube and when you click "embed" choose "use old embed code." That should get you code that still works on LJ.

Thanks for the tip! I edited the entry using the old embed code and now the video is showing up. I didn't know YouTube had made changes to its embedding process, but I thought the code looked different when I was trying to post last night.

Oh, please do watch it when you have time! It's actually really good, even if you're not a huge fan of his. If one person watches, I'll feel like I haven't wasted a post! ;-)

Aw, thanks. Once I discover an actor whose work I really like, then I tend to remain very loyal. I'm the same way with Cate Blanchett and most of the West Wing actors, particularly Brad (although I admit I could never really get into The Good Guys). I don't want to seem too fangirly, though (some people take it waaaay too far), I just have tremendous respect for Gary's talent.

Yes, I tend to be that way too. :) Once something (an actor, a show, etc.) captures me, I love to dive really deeply into it and figure out why I love it so much. And share it with people ! :) I love to see your posts, even if I don't often come in and comment.

Exactly! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's like that. Thanks for saying you like my posts! I appreciate it! :)

Halfway through.
- I love how the reviewer for Immortal Beloved complimented his "mimicking" piano playing.
- His mom is so cute! "You used to be cuddly....You still are." I love her.
- Don't love his dad so much.
- I really like what his friend Roger Williams (?) said about going to see a movie or a play with Gary. That he's exciting to go with because "he misses nothing." What a great observation. :)

Ok, back soon.

Oh, Yay! You're watching! On the special features on the Immortal Beloved DVD, there are some clips of him rehearsing ("chained to a Steinway" haha). He's actually an incredible pianist.

His mom is the cutest thing ever! She's still alive now (I think she's in her 90s) and lives with Gary and his wife and two of Gary's sons in California.

Watching this video was the first time I heard the story about his dad leaving them (I knew he left, but I didn't know the details). The story Gary told about waiting in the driveway every day for his father to come visit and how he never showed up made me so sad.
