"But don't leave town."

You know how everyone is always talking about Castle and how it's such a great show?  Okay, maybe you don't, but a lot of my friends/family have been talking about it, and I know there a few of you on my f-list who watch the show regularly, so I decided to check it out.  I'd seen a couple of episodes in the past, and I thought the premise seemed interesting -- a writer shadowing a detective so he can base a character in his next novel on her -- but I never really got into the series, mostly due to real life stuff that kept me away from the TV last year.  Well, I have a little free time for the next month, so I decided to finally sit down and watch the first two seasons.  I finished season one last night, and I absolutely loved it!

The writing is decent (it's no Sorkin-era West Wing, but really, what show is?), and I appreciate the witty banter between Castle and Beckett. I love that Beckett always has a snarky comment in response to everything Castle says.  Yeah, I can tell already that I'm totally going to ship them, but I think I can do so without too much stress on my part.  The writers know they have a good thing going with all the UST between Beckett and Castle, but they're not stupid enough to try to put them together this early in the series.  Which means I can sit back and enjoy their interactions without freaking out about "will they or won't they" right now.

All the actors are great, as well. I don't watch a lot of sci-fi, so I've never seen Nathan Fillion in Firefly.  In fact, I'm pretty sure the only other thing I've seen him in is the wonderful movie Waitress (written and directed by the late Adrienne Shelly).  Wait, scratch that, I just checked IMDb...he was also in Saving Private Ryan.  Anyway, he's completely fabulous as Castle -- the perfect mix of smarmy and adorable!

I also like Stana Katic as Kate Beckett.  She makes a great tough female cop, but she also successfully manages to balance Beckett's strength with her vulnerability.  And I cannot say enough about Molly C. Quinn as Castle's daughter Alexis!  She is absolutely adorable!  The casting director hit a goldmine with that girl...she's just the cutest thing ever.  I like that fact that Alexis is about 10 times more mature than her father. Susan Sullivan is also wonderful as Castle's mom (Remember her from Dharma & Greg?).  She does washed up stage actress very well.

I'm hoping to start season two tonight (Thanks, Amazon Video-on-Demand!), and I'll post a few more thoughts on the series once I'm finished watching.
