Why do I keep posting this stuff?

It only depresses me.  And yet, I still post it.

San Francisco Chronicle may shut down

New York Post cuts longtime gossip maven Liz Smith (she was interviewed about the situation on CNN this morning)

*sigh*

It does seem as though the big-city papers, the ones that are, perhaps, overextended, are the most vulnerable, doesn't it?

I feel bad for two of my favorite TV writers: Tim Goodman at the Chronicle and Alan Sepinwall at the Star-Ledger.

Yes, it certainly does. Although, my small paper is feeling a bit overextended at the moment. If I hear the phrase "paid space ratio" again today, I'm going to scream.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting we're immune. ;-)

We've had our share of layoffs since the first of the year. But no one's talking about closing down our paper.

We make money, just not as much as we say we're going to make. Which is a problem for a unit of a publicly traded company. A share of Lee Enterprises stock is worth less than the cost of today's issue of our paper.
